'SEE YOU MORNING' 141 Family Conversation

After dinner, Lin Yuhui went alone to Hunter’s parents’ room. The three of them sat down. George stared at Hunter for a long time, while Jillian said nothing, glancing now at George, now at Hunter.
“My son, Grace said you’re Theodore who came back by taking over Hunter’s body,” he said, locking eyes with Lin Yuhui as if waiting for his answer.
“Yes,” what else could Lin Yuhui say? He had indeed taken over his son’s body, only the matter of acknowledging a father was emotionally a bit hard to accept.
Jillian looked at Hunter and said nothing, her eyes reddening.
Seeing this, Lin Yuhui comforted her, taking her hand and saying,
“Mom, Hunter is still in this body too. I’m keeping an eye on him, not letting him come out to cause trouble and make you angry less often.”
“Good boy,” Jillian wiped her tears while holding Lin Yuhui’s hand.
“My son, I’ve been observing you lately. You really don’t look like the old Hunter, but you don’t look like Theodore either. Yet Grace said you actually remember the details of Theodore’s past life with her,” George said slowly and softly, seemingly waiting for Hunter to resolve the doubts in his heart.
“Maybe it’s a compatibility issue between my brother’s body and me. I seem to only be able to access parts of our pasts,” Lin Yuhui made up an excuse.
George nodded, glanced at Jillian beside him, then shifted his gaze back to Hunter and said,
“Anyway, no matter which of our sons you are, you’re still our child. As I told you before, don’t make decisions on your own regarding your position in the company.”
George gave a bitter laugh, then continued,
“I know how my second son grew up. He never did anything serious all day, so I could only give him that simple instruction. Now you’re back to your previous position.”
Before he could finish, Lin Yuhui couldn’t wait to interrupt and ask, first forcing himself to call out against his conscience,
“Dad,” he paused, still feeling awkward.
“That’s also why I wanted to ask you. My memories of the past are limited. I don’t know how I died. Was there some conflict of interest involved? That’s why I came to ask you.”
“Sigh, I don’t know the specifics. He never told me. But I have something for you,” with that, George turned around, picked up a folder and handed it to Hunter.
Lin Yuhui took the folder and opened it to find it full of documents. Although he understood English, they all seemed to be financial and legal documents—contracts, equity information, assets and investment portfolios, and so on.
“This is all I have. Analyze it yourself. Be extra careful. It could be for other reasons, or it really was an accident.”
“Okay,” Lin Yuhui agreed, then thought of another question and hurriedly took the opportunity to ask,
“I want to know—was my gene modified?”
George was stunned, turned his head to glance at his wife Jillian.
She exchanged a look with George, then said kindly to her son,
“Yes, Hunter. Oh no, Theodore. Oh well, you’re both my sons. My family does have a history of genetic optimization, but it was only the previous generation.”
Lin Yuhui couldn’t help but sigh inwardly that he had guessed right. And being able to apply cutting-edge technology decades ago showed that the family was indeed prominent. As he thought this, he quickly replied,
“Okay, I understand, Mom.”
After saying goodbye to the old couple, he returned to Grace’s side. She was playing with the children. Seeing him come back, she took the initiative to step forward and kiss him passionately, completely ignoring the children who were left staring aside. Seeing this, Lin Yuhui gently pushed her away and asked,
“Did you pick the children up?”
“Yeah, before you passed away—“ before she could finish, Grace giggled. She also thought how quickly this whole situation had reversed.
“Before Theodore passed away, and you were at home, Hunter—Hunter was just idling around the house. I was afraid I couldn’t take care of them all, so I sent them to my parents’ house,” she said, calling the children over and saying to them,
“Say daddy. This is your daddy.”
“He’s not. He’s Uncle Hunter,”
Listening to the children’s innocent answer, Lin Yuhui also laughed, thinking to himself, are all women this fickle? They’re not even as steady as children.
“He is. He’s your daddy who came back using your uncle’s body,” Grace explained earnestly to the five or six-year-old children, seemingly in vain.
Lin Yuhui gently shook Grace’s shoulder and comforted her,
“Don’t push the children too hard too soon. Give them some time.”
“Okay,” Grace agreed softly, then turned back to tell her children,
“Don’t tell anyone at school that your daddy came back in your uncle’s body, remember?”
“Oh,” the eldest daughter blinked her eyes at her mother, confused that she had just told her to believe it and now was telling her not to say it.
The little brother still had no idea what was going on at all.
“Huh?” Grace suddenly seemed to remember something, turned back and asked Lin Yuhui,
“Why don’t we get married? Then the children can call you daddy.”
“Uh…” Lin Yuhui didn’t want to be tied down by this woman. His heart was still thinking about the person who might still be in Earth orbit. But he couldn’t refuse directly, so he hurriedly prevaricated,
“Wait, we just had a funeral. Let’s wait a while,” as he spoke to stall, he secretly wondered why Grace was so enthusiastic about him? Things had progressed this far in such a short time? She had resisted Hunter so much at the beginning. Was it because she cherished Theodore more now that he was lost and found again? Or was it the fear of loss making her cling to the present? Or was he really much better than her ex-husband?
As he thought, Lin Yuhui also tried to find fragments of her life with Theodore in her memory, but there was nothing—nothing at all. Right now, there was only him in her mind.
“Hey, Grace, we’re ignoring the children,” seeing the children standing aside watching, Lin Yuhui finally found a good excuse to change the subject.
“Oh, right.”
“What were you playing just now?”
“We were building with blocks,” Grace’s eldest daughter Charlotte answered.
“What building are you making?” Lin Yuhui asked, looking at it. In truth, he couldn’t tell what it was—the work of a six-year-old.
“We’re running a supermarket.”
“Oh,” he agreed. Seeing that the supermarket was really empty, he picked up the chess pieces from the side and said,
“These are customers. Let them line up to buy things.”
“Okay!” Charlotte was delighted and carefully arranged the chess pieces.
Then Lin Yuhui took a notebook from the side, tore off a piece of paper, drew bananas, tomatoes and apples on it, and placed them in the supermarket’s counter and sales area. Then he pointed to the first customer and asked Charlotte,
“What does this customer want to buy?”
She thought for a moment.
“Hmm, he wants to buy apples,” she said, moving the figure in front of the apples.
Lin Yuhui then took a customer of his own, ran ahead of Charlotte’s, and shouted as he ran,
“I want to buy apples! I haven’t had apples for days!”
Seeing someone trying to steal her apple, Charlotte screamed hurriedly,
“Ah! I wanted to buy the apples first!” then quickly made her own customer run too.
Grace, watching from the side, had never seen Theodore play with the children like this before. The husband in front of her seemed a little different from her ex-husband. But in her slightly surprised eyes, did that even matter anymore?
