‘SEE YOU MORNING’ 007 Behavioral Pattern
Looking at Qin Wenjing in his arms, Li Haojun couldn't help but wonder, what made her lack even a stable life expectation? She had said it was basically safe here, and the last trip to Spokane seemed risk-free too. That John, she said, was field ops, probably responsible for security. So what could still be amiss?
Li Haojun's brain analyzed various factors. Could it be? Is that John field ops guy monitoring her or us? But what would be the point? We're just ordinary employees, not involved in any trade secrets or conflicts of interest.
So Li Haojun asked Qin Wenjing,
"Do you want to have children with me someday?"
Qin Wenjing lay smiling in Li Haojun's arms, looking at him. After a long while she said,
"No. I want you to love only me."
"But one day when you're old and I'm no longer here, without children you'll be lonely."
Qin Wenjing looked at Li Haojun, saying nothing, then turned her head away, burying her face in the crook of his arm.
Li Haojun didn't know what was going through this woman's mind, only that she was happy in his arms. So he used his left hand to turn her body toward him, his right arm simultaneously tightening, holding her close, breathing her breath, listening to her listening.
"Ding-dong, ding-dong," the new message alert from the computer broke the tranquility of their private world. After a while, Qin Wenjing sat up from Li Haojun's arms, as if just waking from sleep. She glanced at the message notification—it was a notice to prepare for a business trip.
"Where to this time? What's it about?" Li Haojun asked curiously.
"This time it's a bit far, we have to go to Los Angeles. John will pilot the transport, we'll rendezvous with NeoMemo technicians, then go to the client's entertainment company to maintain equipment. We mainly provide equipment-assisted biological agents to facilitate the interface between the equipment and brainwaves."
"Ah, so you're saying entertainment devices affect the brain, meaning they can alter memories, right? Wouldn't that be perfect for someone like me with amnesia? Save a backup of what I had before, then restore my memory if something happens to me."
"You don't trust those equipment manufacturers," Qin Wenjing said quietly, looking at him.
Li Haojun looked at Qin Wenjing and smiled. He thought to himself, I'm getting carried away. I have no mental defenses in front of her at all. The risk of a Trojan horse is glaringly obvious, but I didn't even consider it, just because it came from her. I can't keep going like this—don't harm myself and don't harm her. Li Haojun thought for a moment then asked,
"What's the principle behind our biological agent, how does it help the human brain respond to the equipment?"
"It enhances the brain's response to the equipment's brainwaves."
"Increasing conductivity, magnetic permeability?"
"Roughly, but it's metabolizable, just take it orally, and if you stop using the equipment, simply discontinue it."
"Haha, basically a disguised addictive drug," Li Haojun laughed.
"Yes, it's regulated as a pharmaceutical. But in the Free Zone, it's exempt from control."
"Oh, this trip is quite far. What transport will we use?"
Usually, we take the flying car John pilots.
"Maybe we should buy two parachute packs as backup…" After saying this, Li Haojun seemed to think of something. He hesitated briefly, and sure enough, Qin Wenjing said,
"We have some. You bought them before."
Li Haojun grinned, wrapped one arm around Qin Wenjing's waist and pulled her into his embrace, gently stroking her cheek, her hair, her neck. As he caressed her, he carefully observed, then said with puzzlement,
"Let me see, what else do you know that you haven't told me?"
Qin Wenjing gave him a coy push. "Oh, you're insufferable."
"You've forgotten things so thoroughly, it would probably take years to tell you everything. Alright, stop fussing, it's broad daylight. I'm going to prepare some food."
"Sure, maybe I should go take inventory of my assets," Li Haojun said. The two then went about their separate tasks.
In the basement, Li Haojun discovered the parachutes in one area—rocket-deployed ones, very effective at low altitude. Alongside them were other operational gear: diving suits, oxygen, harpoons, lighting, beacons, wilderness survival tools, and more.
Adjacent were emergency food and clothing, medical supplies and instruments. Next to those were communications electronics, drone filming equipment. Li Haojun couldn't help but wonder, what did I do before? What am I doing…
Further ahead was an astronomical telescope. Well, compared to the previous stuff, this hobby was less disturbing.
Then came a heap of consumer electronic devices whose purpose he couldn't identify. Some seemed to be head-mounted—could those be brainwave interface devices? Li Haojun picked up one of these devices. It looked battered, its casing stripped away, the electrodes on it also replaced, not like original equipment. Along with the device were some bundled game cartridges: Nurse Rock Climbing, Karina's Birthday Party, The Last Lap Sprint, Fire Alarm 911.
Flipping through these bundled experience cartridges, Li Haojun thought, these must be for fooling kids. What actually circulates can't be this kind of content. Given human weaknesses since ancient times, what the ordinary masses want to experience must be the things they could never attain in their entire lives.
Continuing to rummage through these electronic devices, he found some micro audio-video remote transmission equipment. Li Haojun thought, isn't this just surveillance gear? Wouldn't be bad to use it on that John. One need not harbor harmful intentions, but one must remain vigilant against others. Then he reconsidered, I have so much equipment—hadn't I used it before? It still didn't prevent that unverifiable car accident that caused my amnesia. So, hold back, proceed with caution.
"Haojun, come up for lunch," Qin Wenjing's silvery voice came from the basement doorway.
Qin Wenjing sat opposite him. Today she wore an off-shoulder white cocktail dress with an asymmetrical hem, her flowing hair gathered again over her left chest, but this time her left bangs were adorned with small thin braids tied with pale pink, pale green, and flower-blue ribbons.
"Pizza for lunch today, how's that?" Qin Wenjing said with a beaming smile.
"Great, thank you for your hard work, my dear wife," Li Haojun said, stepping around the table to kiss her lips.
"That doesn't count, the pizza was ready-made, just heated up. I made some iced lemon water myself—try it, see if you like it."
Li Haojun tasted a little and said, "Lemon is ample, on the sour side. I see, you really are my true wife. But it suits a meat-topped pizza, very refreshing!" He gave a thumbs-up.
"Thank you."
Qin Wenjing felt deeply flattered inside, lowering her head and smiling as she stirred her lemon water, her head and upper body gently swaying with the motion of the straw. Tilting her head, her bangs, small braids, and ribbons slid across her cheek and swayed.
Li Haojun didn't start eating, nor did he speak. He just sat quietly, smiling, admiring Qin Wenjing's figure from across the table.
After a while, Qin Wenjing looked up. Seeing Li Haojun gazing at her, her heart swelled even more, the corners of her mouth threatening to reach her ears. She quickly said, "Eat, what are you staring foolishly at? It's all yours." She lowered her head again with a laugh, continuing to toy with the lemon water in her hands.
Li Haojun rose gently once more, circled the table, came before her, bent down and placed both hands on her shoulders, slowly caressing up to her neck, her cheeks, then cupped her face and kissed her lips again.
It was a tangy, sweet, minty-fresh taste. Then Li Haojun hugged her shoulders tightly, clasped her waist, and gave her a deep kiss—a taste of merging with her.
