Episode 28: Rival
Quantum Arena.
Ddakji Playground.
Morning arrived. The sound of paper striking paper echoed across the courtyard.
Smack. Smack. Smack.
The atmosphere was completely different from Jachigi. There, everyone challenged themselves. Here, every challenge had an opponent.
Jinwoo quickly realized it. Winning wasn’t enough. He had to understand the person standing in front of him.
Hanul wasn’t watching the Ddakji. He was watching the players.
Some always struck with force. Some hesitated. Some became impatient after missing once. Others smiled, even after losing.
“…Interesting.” Hanul whispered.
Jinwoo laughed.
“Researching again?”
Hanul nodded.
“I’m watching.”
“The game?”
“No. The people.”
Nearby, Darin had already made several new friends. Every match ended with laughter.
Soyeon sat quietly, watching every match.
Patterns. Habits. Expressions. Every player revealed something different.
Beyond the Ddakji playground, the rest of the village remained lively. Children chased spinning tops. Marbles clicked against one another. Rolling hoops crossed the village road. The playgrounds never fell silent.
One by one, friendly matches began. No rankings. No elimination. Only curiosity.
Hanul won. Lost. Won again. Each match taught him something new.
Jinwoo relied on instinct. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn’t.
“…How did you know I was going to do that?”
Hanul smiled.
“I didn’t. I guessed.”
“…Based on what?”
“You. You always swing the same way.”
Jinwoo blinked. He had never noticed. For the first time, he wasn’t learning about Ddakji. He was learning about himself.
Above the village, Arena observed.
The same game. Different opponents. Different decisions. Different outcomes.
[ARENA OBSERVATION LOG]
Analysis ongoing.
Far beyond Earth… Silence.
A blue planet floated in the darkness.
Several figures watched without speaking.
One finally broke the silence.
“They’ve begun.”
Another answered.
“The recovery is progressing. The Superintelligence has chosen an unexpected path.”
Silence.
A third figure continued watching Earth.
“Continue observation. No intervention.”
Farther away, another shadow turned its back.
“…Observation changes nothing.” Its voice was cold. “They should be managed.”
No one replied.
Only the blue planet continued to turn, unaware that it had gained its first silent observers.
