Chapter 10: The Shattered Mask
The campus courtyard was blanketed in a heavy, suffocating fog for the evening vigil. Hundreds of students stood around the central stone fountain holding flickering wax candles, their hushed, mournful whispers filling the damp autumn air.
Devin stood near the back of the crowd under the shadow of the tall oak trees. He was dressed meticulously in a sharp black coat, his hair neatly styled, his stance perfectly upright. He was putting on his ultimate performance—standing tall, nodding politely at passing faculty members, and pretending he had everything under control. He was the anchor, the unshakable hero holding space for everyone else’s grief.
Cassie stood right beside him, clutching his arm with both hands, her eyes swollen and red, leaning into his side for strength. Eva stood a few paces back near a stone pillar, her hands shoved deep into her jacket pockets, watching Devin with a look of terrifying, quiet concern. She could see what Cassie and the rest of the campus couldn’t: Devin wasn’t strong. He was a hollowed-out shell, one small push away from complete annihilation.
Heavy, furious footsteps crunched violently through the wet gravel.
Aby cut straight through the crowd, shoving past grieving students without a word. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks in dark trails, her face flushed red with a deadly mix of raw heartbreak and scorching rage. She ignored the candles and ignored the solemn atmosphere as she walked straight toward Devin.
Aby: “Hey homeboy!! How satisfying is it for your ego to pretend to be a nice guy!? Cuz you know you’re a dickhead… You know that.”
Devin stood shocked as hell, his eyes wide, frozen in place as he stared at her. His rehearsed, polite facade faltered for a fraction of a second before he tried to pull himself together.
Devin: “I’m not up for a convo, my friend. I need help, everyone’s help.”
Aby: “Do you serve this ‘long gone’ ideas of him? You wanted him to be safe, but at what cost? Now you hate yourself cuz you ain’t done a goddamn thing about it.”
Devin: “I always made sure he was safe until I wasn’t… I don’t understand a single word you said just now, but trust me, it’s not about him.”
Aby: (Her voice rising, cutting through the silence of the entire courtyard) “Wow. It’s not about him? Just say his name for once and I will trust this fake ass persona of yours.”
Devin: (Looking over at Cassie and Eva, a quick, desperate flash of panic in his eyes) “Told you, it’s not about him.”
Aby: (Reaching out and grabbing the lapels of his black coat, screaming right into his face) “Oh, for Christ’s sake, say his name you coward! Just say his name!”
The entire courtyard fell into a dead silence. Students turned around, holding their breath. Cassie gasped, reaching out to pull Aby’s hands off his coat, but Devin stayed entirely motionless.
And then, right under the dim yellow light of the courtyard lamps, a single, heavy tear escaped Devin’s right eye and rolled slowly down his cheek. He didn’t wipe it away. His fake, protective composure fractured right in front of everyone.
Devin: (A single tear slipping down his cheek) “I’m sorry… it’s just not about him.”
Aby: (Shoving him back with all her remaining strength, her voice breaking into an absolute, agonizing scream) “I swear to god Devin, I thought you were a hero! Let me tell you what you are—you are a fucking joke! I’ve never met a sadder, more attention-starved loser! Motherfucker, I wish I could say you die right here, but that mother of yours is like an angel to me! What about that wit of yours? Trust me, that ex of yours was so right—you will never save your world! You couldn’t even save a relationship with a goddamn whore!”
The harsh words echoed off the concrete walls of the quad, sharp as broken glass.
Aby turned and fled into the dark fog, her sobs fading into the distance. The crowd stood stunned, whispering in shock.
Cassie covered her mouth, terror and heartbreak written across her face as she heard Devin’s deepest, most humiliating secrets dragged out into the open. Eva didn’t look away for a single second. She stared at Devin, watching the “Starboy” completely stripped naked, ruined, and exposed to the entire world.
